Another random shot exercise. I have been inspired enormously these past few days by the genius of Tatsuyuki Tanaka and Yasushi Nirasawa. I also chanced upon Donata Giancola's process video of Joan of Arc and The Mechanic (Damn! I miss oil painting). Lastly, I started listening to the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack again. 2 more days before summer school starts, which means less time for 11shots and exploring. Shall enjoy it while it lasts! 18 JUN OTS/WS/ECU/HA/DA/CU/EWS/CBS/LA/POV Took a leisurely walk to the San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor today. Was reminded of a friend from art school who is a veteran and now lives on his yacht at the harbor. Today's story is dedicated to that friend. The first 2 shots were pre-planned whilst the remaining 9 were random. 17 Jun POV/MS/DA/EWS/LA/WS/CBS/CU/HA/ECU/OTS I realized that I missed a day by accident on 31 May. I was not feeling too well in Bogota then, preparing for my flight to Cartagena at night. Anyway, I made up for it by doing 2 stories today. Again, I gave myself a random shot order to fulfill. Additionally, for 'My Baby',I tried to rely less on line but more on value shapes to simplify my composition and save precious time. I hope you enjoy the stories! (: 31 May MS/OTS/CU/POV/EWS/LA/DA/ECU/HA/WS/CBS About 'My Baby' - Initially I wanted to do a boxing match because the first few shots seemed perfect for that (MS of Boxer 1, OTS of Boxer 1 in foreground with Boxer 2 in midground, CU of Boxer 1, POV of Boxer 1 seeing Boxer 2's glove flying into his face etc...). Instead, I decided to turn the violent boxing story on its head into the sweet 'My Baby' because I found it funny and challenging. 16 Jun WS/OTS/LA/MS/HA/CU/DA/ECU/POV/CBS/EWS It's been a month since I started this exercise so I have decided to pick 3 of my favorite stories I have done so far! There were many stories that I liked but because of my messy and hideous draftsmanship no one could understand them but me. These stories were chosen because I felt that they were the most clearly understood :D In the previous post, my stories followed the systematic inward/outward progression of shots. It is an effective way to tell a story but it was starting to feel formulaic. I decided to randomize my shots from 08 Jun onward and these are the results. Additionally, I decided to expand the story on 14 Jun across 2 days. Looking over my work there are 2 main areas where I need to improve on. 1. CLARITY 2. Composition (to support story point) -Specifically... a. Lighting I was excited and nervous at first about this exercise of randomized shots as I felt that I might have to force inappropriate shots into a story. Thankfully, I found ways to work with the limitation, such as using hybrid shots and creating a story that revolved around the random shot order. I have provided the random shot order for each of the stories above each video link. 14+15JUN DA/WS/POV/LA/MS/OTS/ECU/CBS/EWS/CU/HA/HA/MS/LA/WS/DA/OTS/CU/ECU/CBS/POV/EWS 13JUN CBS/LA/WS/DA/CU/EWS/HA/MS/ECU/OTS/POV 12JUN DA/LA/OTS/MS/HA/POV/WS/CBS/CU/ECU/EWS 11JUN DA/OTS/ECU/WS/LA/MS/EWS/CU/HA/CBS/POV 10JUN POV/CU/EWS/DA/LA/OTS/HA/CBS/WS/ECU/MS 09JUN OTS/EWS/POV/CU/LA/ECU/HA/MS/WS/DA/CBS 08JUN CBS/OTS/MS/EWS/WS/LA/CU/ECU/HA/DA/POV I decided to start this daily exercise of creating a simple story using the standard 11 shots in film-making. My goal is to create a story everyday regardless of circumstance. I hope to improve my writing, composition, gesture, camera movement and clarity of draftsmanship (amongst many other things!) through this exercise. These are the first 22 stories in the series. They mainly start with an inward/outward progression (e.g. EWS -> WS -> MS etc. or ECU -> CU -> MS etc. ) |
